Nintendo is stopping production of its latest console, the Wii U, according to a report in the Japanese newspaper Nikkei.
This will fundamentally change the gaming company that seems to be shifting from the Wii U and the old 3DS platform to its upcoming dedicated NX device.
The publication reports that Nintendo has already stopped manufacturing some Wii U accessories. And of course, that makes sense.
The Wii U has fallen far behind Microsoft and Sony in the competitive arena despite having a year's head start.
A $99.3 billion gaming industry like Nintendo shouldn't lose any more ground, and money, to a platform that lags behind competitors.
The Nikkei publication also claims that Nintendo will release the NX this year, something the company has said in the past.
But by halting production of the Wii U, Nintendo could potentially launch its successor more intensively this year.
