Chaos with a scam contest on Greek Facebook – They used MAC Cosmetics as bait
At lightning speed, the scam contest went viral on facebook. By the time they downloaded the page that promised gifts worth 100 euros from MAC Cosmetics to 10,000 lucky people, it had been shared over 12,000 times.

One admittedly attractive gift was, as it turned out, an extremely successful bait for a large share of Greek Facebook users. It was over 12,000 those who “bit” the scam contest that promised €100 gift vouchers from MAC Cosmetics to 10,000 lucky ones.
The message spread within a few hours at lightning speed. It was, after all, one of the terms set by the scammers who used it to lure the cosmetics company MAC Cosmetics. Anyone who wanted to participate had to copy a message, send it to 5 friends, and share this page on their personal account writing another thank‑you message for the supposed gift they were claiming from MAC Cosmetics.
MAC Cosmetics, as the company officials stated to NEWSIT, is not the first time it has been used as a lure. “Lately, websites with contests and special offers concerning our brand have been appearing on the internet. These are not authorized websites of M·A·C Cosmetics and have no connection with our company. M·A·C Cosmetics, on its part, has already undertaken all the necessary procedures mandated by law”. After the latest incident, they urge citizens to get information only from the official website of M·A·C Cosmetics and the company's official Facebook page.

It is worth noting also the fact that such a contest managed to deceive so many Facebook users. Most simply followed the suggested steps, without delving into the process to investigate further. This reveals the tendency of carelessness that characterizes us in managing social media. If someone had devoted a little time, they would have noticed at first glance the exaggerations and errors on that specific page and the text they were supposed to post and would have shouted “fraud”. No one would have expected such a half‑baked contest from a large company that even gives away gifts worth 1.000.000 euros (they claimed this amount would be distributed in total)! Another incident that comes to teach us that we must be more careful, as it is very easy out of carelessness to fall victim to scammers.
