The 5 'must have' tools for protecting your social media accounts

It's a fact that social media has taken over the world! There are social networking sites that have millions of members, and which allow their members to share their photos, videos, messages, at any time and place!

In reality, social media today represent about 80 percent of the time someone spends online. We are (almost) all members on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus or have other social media accounts and… these accounts are often vulnerable to hacking.

The 5 'must have' tools for protecting your social media accounts

What did you just say? And what about it?

One of the main reasons for hacking your social media accounts is the loss of the password. Hackers gain access to your account by obtaining your password through the common social engineering technique, or another attack method. These risks result in anything from harmless trolling for fun, to very serious issues such as severe damage to someone's reputation, financial problems, and even legal prosecutions if a hacked account is used to commit a crime.

Therefore, protecting your social media accounts is very very important and that's why I will present you with five simple and functional software tools that can offer you some degree of social media protection:

1) LastPass

LastPass is a free password management service that stores encrypted passwords in the cloud. The service is able to save existing passwords as well as generate new ones. It provides two-factor authentication, and the only password the user needs to remember is the main password for LastPass itself.

2) LogDog

LogDog is a free product designed to monitor any suspicious activity related to your social media accounts. The system continuously detects various indicators of unauthorized access. When an attack is detected, LogDog sends intrusion notifications and allows users to regain control of their accounts. Currently, it is available only for Android devices.

3) HTTPS Everywhere

If you share the devices used to access your social media accounts with others, or frequently take them into public spaces, it is better to protect them with an extra security layer encrypting the traffic. HTTPS Everywhere is a free browser extension that converts websites from HTTP (unsecured) to HTTPS (secured).

4) AVG PrivacyFix

AVG PrivacyFix is a free application that helps users customize the privacy settings of Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn and Twitter, and blocks unwanted tracking. It is currently available for Chrome, Android and iOS.

5) Digi.me (formerly SocialSafe)

Another free tool, Digi.me, is designed to store social media data in case all information is lost as a result of hacking. It allows you to create a backup and view the content from up to four of your social media accounts.
