The world's oldest torrent is still being downloaded 12 years later!
The world's oldest torrent is still active and being downloaded by users all over the world. It is a fan-made ASCII version of the 1999 sci-fi film 'The Matrix'. The torrent has been around for 12 years, and it has once again become popular among users!
To keep a file alive, at least one person must continue to share it. While most torrents disappear after users lose interest in them, some torrents live forever. The website where this ASCII torrent originated has disappeared, but the file continues to erase its tracks.
TorrentFreak reports that the torrent has seen over 5000 completed downloads. Thanks to recent publicity, this torrent has 6-8 seeders on the websites KickAssTorrents, SeedPeer.me, TorrentFunk.come, YourBittorent.com, Manova.org, Bitsnoop.com, and TorrentProject.se.

The actual birth date of this torrent is a bit of a controversial one. While TorrentFreak has been around since December 2003, an Internet Archive cache says it was made available in January 2004.
Here is the original description of the torrent:
The.Matrix -ASCII is the original Matrix movie encoded in text. The final product is an MPEG-2 file, 7989979136 bytes in size, too large to fit on a DVD5. I re-encoded the ASCII movie to fit on a standard DVDR. The two samples are from the larger file and are of higher quality. The DVDRs are available via BitTorrent. If you want to download the final movie or any of the samples using BitTorrent with Java installed, I recommend Azureus: otherwise TheSHADOW's BitTorrent Client should work fine. You will need a media player that can play MPEG-2 videos to watch the sample and a DVD player to watch the movie.

Today, the BitTorrent file system has evolved into an excellent content sharing mechanism. However, 12 years ago, the network did not enjoy such popularity. Despite the odds, the existence of this torrent is a testament to BitTorrent's success.
Keep sharing!! Let's keep it alive!! 😉
