ISIS, you don't want to mess with the leader of search engines
Anonymous may be doing its best to limit ISIS’s presence on social media platforms, but even they don’t have the power to stop it like Google does. The company behind the world’s most popular search engine is looking to keep the terrorist group in check by confining it to the Dark Web, an area where the tech giant has no control. Google’s chief ideas officer, Jared Cohen, talked about his idea in an online propaganda video and showed how tech companies, which have a considerable influence on the internet, can stop their activities, at least on the visible side of the internet.
We are sure that in the near future, companies like Microsoft, Mozilla and Yahoo will also help to hinder ISIS activities since the companies also have their own web browsers. The terrorist organization, which is also known as Daesh, or ISIL, has amassed a lot of talented personnel, which is why they have been able to increase their online presence . Cohen believes that while tech companies can certainly put a huge obstacle in their progress, he admits that there is a very small chance that they will drive terrorist organizations completely offline.
This is due to the fact that in addition to social media channels, ISIS will certainly have gained a huge presence on the other side of the internet, a side that most of us are not aware of.
“What ISIS is doing is reflecting the times, as opposed to some new complexity that has magically appeared. But while the digital front is more complex, it could be the place where we can see the biggest short-term victory, so we shouldn’t neglect it.”
By cutting off these social media accounts, ISIS will only have one piece to communicate with, and that will be the Dark Web. We'll see how Google manages to curb activities , but we can be happy that finally someone has realized how big a threat ISIS is becoming online.
