The Chinese country code domain “.cn” has far surpassed Germany's '.de' domain and climbed to first place as the world's largest.

The Chinese country code domain '.cn' has managed to surpass Germany's '.de' and become the most used on the internet.
Xinhua reported on data released on Friday that the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), which manages the “.cn” domain, had about 16.36 million users by the end of 2015, surpassing Germany’s “.de” domain.
The head of CNNIC, Mr. Li Xiaodong, specifically mentioned that the '.cn' domain also leads in the field of security, domain resolution service, and the proportion of good-willed users on the Internet.
The '.cn' domain has been able to protect users' interests, and minimize cases of online theft, phishing and fraud, since China began having real name registration in 2009, Li said.
The German '.de' domain previously had the largest number of registered websites.
CNNIC points out that the domain is not only expanding due to its use by Chinese companies, but also by international companies, institutes and multinationals.
The government news agency 'Xinhua news' reports that in addition to commercial banks, it is used by all of China's central and provincial governments and by many of the telecommunications companies.
Among the multinationals using the Chinese domain are Apple, Microsoft, Citibank and Amazon.
According to official data, China has approximately 670 million internet users and more than 4.13 million websites.
