To increase their revenue, advertisers are resorting to risky tactics, delivering pop-up messages on Android, so that the user installs special software, which is known as affiliate marketing.
This scenario has been successfully used by cybercriminals in the past to install malware on the unsuspecting user, or lure them into other scams.
The browsing experience is interrupted by a banner or pop-up when the device user visits a specific website, reports Armando Orozco from Malwarebytes.
From what the security researcher observed, the ads do not refer to malware, although this should not be ruled out, but to legitimate applications, such as the Dolphin browser for Android.
In many cases, the messages are misleading, claiming that the operating system needs to be updated or that the browser the user is using has serious errors and should be replaced.
The researcher suggests using Adblock Plus to filter out annoying ads and stop most of them from loading.
