Do you have a smartphone or tablet and want to travel by public transportation? Then you can buy your ticket from your device without looking for the "magic card" at kiosks or points of sale.
Since Christmas, Athens Public Transport (APT) has been preparing a special application based on which the new way of purchasing tickets (mobile ticketing) will operate, which will constitute the transitional stage for the transition to electronic tickets.
By the end of 2015, the network of 1,000 smart stops and the telematics project on buses and trolleybuses will be completed, the pilot operation of which was inaugurated yesterday on line 224 "Kaesariani - El. Venizelou", by the Minister of Transport Mich. Chrysochoidis.
Specifically, regarding mobile ticketing, the SA administration plans to put it into operation by the end of 2014. The passenger will download an application on their smartphone or tablet through which they will see all types of tickets (simple, reduced, etc.). With a click on the ticket they want, they will proceed to purchase it.
The ticket payment will be made automatically via a credit, debit or prepaid card that will be connected to the specific mobile ticketing application. In a next phase, passengers are being considered to be able to pay for their tickets via Paypal. Immediately after paying for the ticket, the passenger will activate it with the press of a button.
A unique code will appear on the screen of his mobile phone, as well as the countdown of the ticket duration (the time will start at 70 minutes and will decrease).
When checking tickets, the passenger will show the inspector the screen of their mobile phone with the unique code, the validity of which will be confirmed by scanning it with a special scanner (rider).
The SA plans to convert the unlimited travel card to electronic as of 2015. The card will look like a credit card and will have the photo and name of its holder.
