US security researchers have discovered a vulnerability that allows Gmail with up to 92% success across Android, iOS and Windows operating systems.
The vulnerability was discovered by experts from the University of California Riverside Bourns College of Engineering and the University of Michigan, who identified a weakness believed to exist in the implementation of all operating systems. They said the vulnerability could allow a hacker to steal sensitive user data.
The findings were presented in a paper at the USENIX Security Symposium in San Diego on August 22. Although it was only tested on an Android phone, the team believes the method could be used across operating systems because applications on all operating systems can access shared memory on a mobile device.
