Vimeo announces new HTML5-based video player

For a year, Vimeo has been secretly testing a new video player for its video services. Starting today, the new video player is available to all users, with several improvements and new features.

The new video player is built on HTML5, with a bit of Flash for certain functions, so it loads twice as fast as before, whether it's on a Vimeo page or embedded in another site. A video also starts playing in half the time compared to before, making streaming faster.

Visually, the video player has not changed much since its previous version. Notable is the responsive design, which the Vimeo team challenges us to try, in order to discover how the player works equally well on all devices and in their various resolutions. Regarding the icons, the embed has been integrated into the share, which has been redesigned to make it easier to share videos in various ways.

The video player has some new features, such as Vimeo On Demand payments for Pro users, who can pay for a paid video without leaving the player. New features include subtitles ,which users can upload to videos, and closed captions.

Finally, for users who already have a Vimeo video playing and choose to play another Vimeo video in another browser tab, the first video will automatically pause and the second video will start playing.
