Google giant will do its best to guess, with a new feature for emails called "smart reply."
The new feature was introduced on Tuesday and is located in the Gmail app's inbox. The "smart" reply feature analyzes the text in incoming emails and offers three customized responses that you can ignore or edit. The feature is likely to arrive this week in the version of the inbox app that is available on smartphones and tablets running Google's Android software and its competitor, Apple's iOS
It may seem simple, but in reality the new feature requires complex technology called “deep learning,” a newer term for artificial intelligence. Google has used this technology to give its services some of the intellectual dexterity and complexity of an actual human mind. With this technology, Google already checks for spam, identifies photos, translates text, and tries to spot trends in your data sheet.
“The possibilities of machine learning are endless,” said Amit Singh, Google’s president of Work.
“Smart Reply” is available as a smartphone app, a good option for quick responses that technology offers.
"On mobile, the actions we take in text messages are very short and usually involve specific actions," Singh said.
The feature takes Google's email reading to a new level. The company already checks the content of messages to reduce spam and has done so in the past to manage ads. But now, the electronic scrutiny is going deeper through a machine learning system known as "deep neural networks.".
The system also learns from human signals, such as the responses people choose or avoid. For this reason, Google stepped in to prevent a common response that is generally inappropriate for corporate messages: “I love you.”.
