IoT45 companies collaborate to create IoT Security Foundation

45 technology companies active in the IoT (Internet of Things) market are joining forces to create a non-profit group that will focus on improving security guidelines around Internet of Things.

While initially hailed as a logical development, IoT products have begun to become a burden on their creators, mainly due to security gaps that many had not anticipated.

Every time experts "break" devices with miraculous ease - something that happens more and more often -, their manufacturers not only lose customers but also find themselves in a difficult position.

To avoid further damage to their image, as well as possible future lawsuits, the companies are teaming up and creating the Internet of Things  Security Foundation, which will act as an intermediary between producers and end consumers, testing Internet of Things to identify any security vulnerabilities before they are distributed to the public along with the devices.

If this sounds familiar, you're probably aware of the Online Trust Alliance, an informal industry community and charity that earlier this month announced the release of a security training framework aimed at improving the security of Internet of Thingsby educating manufacturers on common security best practices.

The founding members of the organization come from the academic world (see University of Greenwich, City University London), but also from global firms such as Vodafone, BT, Siemens, Intel, as well as Broadcom, Semtech.
