Land Rover: Vulnerability identified in car system software

Land Rover: Vulnerability identified in keyless entry system – This bug affects Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models sold from 2013 to the present.

The Land Rover car manufacturer recently recalled approximately 65,000 of its cars after discovering a fairly serious vulnerability in the system's software, which causes the vehicle to be unlocked.

Due to this vulnerability, drivers are unaware that their car doors are automatically unlocked, as no indication appears on the system screen.

As reported by the BBC news network, this error affects Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models sold from 2013 to the present.

Experts say that problems with keyless ignition and automatic locking systems in some luxury vehicles have given many car thieves a free hand.

The recall comes after reports emerged last yearthat fraudsters were targeting certain models of Land Rover's Range Rover and BMW's X5, finding easy ways to hack the vehicles.

“It has been known for at least a year that keyless entry systems present certain vulnerabilities,” said a spokesman for Thatcham Research, which collects data on car crime. “There have been reports that certain car models are vulnerable to this type of attack, including the Range Rover. These are incidents of keyless entry system breaches,” he added.

A criminal can gain access to the car by connecting a special device to the vehicle's system in order to reprogram the key used to start it.

In a statement, the company said that no accidents or injuries have been reported due to this specific problem.
