INTERPOL -Cyber Security during major sporting events
Sports event security experts met at the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation in Singapore to share best practices and develop plans for cybersecurity during major sporting events.
The two-day meeting (20 & 21 May 2015) was attended by 12 experts from 7 different countries. In the first phase, an attempt was made to identify digital threats during global sporting events and then strategies for preventing and dealing with these threats were discussed. At the same time, reference was also made to the part of informing the public, which is an equally important parameter.
The meeting was held under the auspices of INTERPOL’s Stadia project, funded by Qatar and set to conclude in 2022, with the organization of the FIFA World Cup. The project aims to provide INTERPOL member states with valuable knowledge and practical experience in the field of sports event security, both in the physical world and in cyberspace.
"This will allow them to better and more effectively protect their critical infrastructure when hosting a major sporting event," said Michael O'Connell, Stadia project lead and Director of Operational Police Support at INTERPOL.
Qatar, which will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, also expects significant benefits from the annual meetings of cybersecurity experts, as reported by Abdulaziz Al Thani, Information Security Officer, who represented the Qatari Ministry of Interior.
It is worth mentioning, finally, that the countries represented at the meeting were Australia, Japan, South Korea, Qatar, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
