The application Flightbeat will be able to monitor the physical and mental state of passengers, through special heart rate sensors integrated into the seats.

Flaminia Del Conte, who participated in the project, explained to MailOnline Travel that the application is currently at the concept stage, but the sensor technology exists and the team is considering collaborating with a major car manufacturer.

"Seats will be checked by crew members through the app, in order to have an overview of the passengers' condition and intervene if they find that someone is unwell," she added.

"This could prevent the possibility of emergency landings, which are expensive," he continued.

She collaborated with students Mirthe Monninkhof, Quirine van Walt Meijer, Alexander Vervoort and Isbrand Karman of the Delft University of Technology, as part of a master's degree program.
