A Facebook game is taking on alarming proportions internationally, inviting teenagers to disappear without a trace for 72 hours.
The new trend being observed is called “12, 24, 72” or “Game of 72.” Its existence was discovered when a 13-year-old girl from France disappeared for three days in the northern part of the country.
When Emma returned home, she did not tell her parents where she was, what she was doing, or whether she had played the game on Facebook. French authorities are only aware of the latest craze because a teenager spoke out about it.
"While searching for images on the internet I came across this game," he said, according to the RTL website.
French authorities said: "The minor remained unclear about what he had done during this action, refusing to give the names of people who could provide evidence," according to the Societé website.
Parents are warning each other with various posts about the dangers that lie ahead. The French group “Dangerous Games for Children on the Internet” is informing parents and suggesting that they be vigilant about their children’s possible participation in these games. “There is a real psychosis. We advise parents to check their children’s Facebook profiles and mobile phones. They should also encourage them to talk to adults.
Last year, French youths took part in a game called "River or Restaurant," in which they challenged each other via Facebook to jump into the water. The prank led to tragedy when a teenager drowned after tying his bicycle to his leg and jumping into a river.
But the well-known online game NekNominate, an alcohol drinking competition, is also believed to have claimed the lives of five people in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
