Paypal is investigating the possibility of "physical body recognition".
Paypal is working on a new generation of new devices that can be integrated, implanted or injected into the body, which could replace passwords as a means of identifying their users.
Jonathan LeBlanc, global head of development at PayPal, claims that these devices could be brain implants, very thin silicon chips embedded in the skin, or battery-powered devices that could be taken like a… pill and powered by stomach acids.
"These devices could enable so-called 'natural body identification', monitoring the body's internal functions, such as heart rate, glucose levels and vessel identification," LeBlanc explained to the Wall Street Journal.
Over time, they could replace passwords and even more advanced identification methods, such as fingerprint scanning and location verification, which – as he commented – “are not always reliable.”.
"As long as passwords remain the standard method of identifying users online, people will continue to use passwords like 'password123' to securely log into their accounts and will continue to be surprised when their accounts are compromised," he added.
LeBlanc also said that PayPal is already working on creating vein and heartbeat recognition technology, as well as prototypes of futuristic identity verification techniques.
He explained, however, that when it comes to new technologies , PayPal is not necessarily thinking about adopting them, but hopes to establish itself as a "thought leader."
"I can't say what PayPal will do in the future, but we are looking at new techniques and we are certainly looking at the area of identity recognition ," he said
