Greek Super Markets Enter the Internet

Convert Group eBusiness Consulting, the consulting firm that has guided the strategy of Greek supermarket chains for their online operations, estimates that the value of consumer goods purchases from them will reach 383 million euros in 2020.

Greek Super Markets Enter the Internet

Assuming that the total turnover of supermarkets in 2020 will amount to 10.5 billion euros, then the sales of electronic supermarkets will constitute 3.6% of the entire sector and 2.9% of the total value of goods and services that Greeks will purchase from the Internet.

"These forecasts are likely to be modest," said Convert Group CEO Panagiotis Gezerlis, adding: "In England, 5% of purchases from supermarkets are already made online and we have found in many sectors that e-commerce trends are coming to Greece with a 5-year delay."

In determining the value of online shopping, the estimates of the factors in the supermarket sector have been taken into account and these have been reflected in the  graph below, by year and by type of supermarket. The largest turnover will gradually be created by the large traditional chains (AB Vassilopoulos, Sklavenitis, Carrefour Marinopoulos, LIDL, Masoutis, etc.) followed by purely electronic supermarkets such as welovesupermarket.gr, caremarket.gr, mamashome.gr.

According to the company, small traditional chains that usually focus on specific geographic areas will have a significant opportunity to expand their customer network and deliver via e-commerce throughout the territory.

Finally, the picture is completed by online department stores such as you.gr, z-mall.gr, etc. that have included daily use products in their available for sale items, such as detergents, diapers, cleaning products, etc.

The main reason why Greeks turn to online supermarkets is to save time, followed by the existence of online offers with low prices and the variety of products that may not be available in local supermarkets.
The turnover of online pharmacies has multiplied in two years.

Interestingly, one sector that has a lot in common with the online supermarket sector is that of online pharmacies. Already in 2014, the turnover of online pharmacies in Greece approached 80 million euros, while 2 years ago it was only 10 million euros. And this fact proves how quickly Greeks are adopting online shopping for daily care, grooming and nutritional supplements.
