Most people do not systematically back up their smartphone, leaving them with no recovery option in the event of loss or damage.

According to a survey by ESET as part of the Mobile World Congress, regarding the use of smartphones, 29.3% responded that they do not lock their smartphone, one in ten has lost or been a victim of theft of their device during the previous 12 months and approximately 20% of users do not back up their data.

The aim of the research, which was carried out with a sample of 500 social media users, was to collect data regarding mobile phone security.

Raphael Labaca Castro, one of ESET's speakers at Mobile World Congress, offers advice on how users can stay safe online: "For Android users, a security solution is essential, as last year the threats we detected on this platform broke all records, including the first file-encrypting ransomware discovered by our research labs.".

According to Castro, it is also very important to regularly back up the data stored on a smartphone. Based on ESET's research, 19.7% of users actually do not back up their data at all and 35.7% do so only occasionally (19.9% daily, 14.7% weekly and 10% monthly).

One of the best protection tools against phone tampering by individuals is locking the device, while security software with Anti-Theft can also help in locating it.

However, 29.3% do not lock their phone or screen, while the majority – 55.3% – use a PIN number for locking, 12.5% use fingerprints and 3% use the face recognition feature.
