Internet gap on the planet

40% of the total population has never connected to the Internet

Internet

On the one hand, highly networked areas and on the other, zones that are practically cut off: this seems to be the picture of our planet when it comes to the Internet, according to data from Internet.org, which is included in the "State of Connectivity: A Report on Global Internet Access".

As stated in a relevant publication on the SEPE website, at the beginning of 2015, three billion people had access to the Internet, however 40% had never connected.

In the developed markets of the world, Internet penetration reaches 78%, however, developing economies are in a digital "Middle Ages", where the corresponding percentage is 32%.

It is noted that developing markets host the vast majority, specifically 94% of the world's population, who are currently offline.

This imbalance seems to be holding back the global growth rate of the Internet, which is gradually slowing down.

The growth rate of the international Internet  was 6.6% in 2014, compared to 12.4% in 2008. If these growth rates are maintained at similar levels, the goal of 4 billion people accessing the Internet by 2019 will not be achieved.

The further acceleration of the diffusion of the Internet is hampered, in addition to the lack of appropriate infrastructure, by the cost of access, according to the research data.

According to the same data, monthly access to a data volume of 250MB is feasible for 50% of the world's population, while 80% can support data usage of up to 100MB, with the percentage jumping to 90% for data volumes of up to 20MB.

However, in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, where 705% of the population lives on less than $2 a day, only 53% of residents can support Internet access of up to 20MB, which corresponds to 1 to 2 hours of browsing per month.
