Have you ever had the feeling that some phone operating systems are more likely to cause app crashes than others?
Crittercism has posted its latest analysis of crash reports for nearly 20,000 apps, and it's clear that some operating systems aren't as friendly as others. Android's Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) is more likely to ruin your day. KitKat (4.4) is next, while the rumored crashes surrounding Lollipop apparently don't affect apps. With Apple devices, however, the tables are turned. While the crash rate for iOS is lower overall, iOS 8 is a bit more problematic than its predecessor. That's not surprising, given that Apple didn't have as much time to address the issues in iOS 8, but you might feel better if you're still using iOS 7.
Don't be too quick to brag about your choice. Statistics say a lot about app stability, but they don't reveal much about your operating system. A stable social media app isn't affected much if core Android or iOS features break. Also, the information can be skewed depending on the number of active users. It's hard to know how reliable Lollipop will be in the long run when only a small fraction of Android devices are running it. In short, Crittercism's data shows that stability is neither improving nor worsening, it varies from version to version.
