Mount Athos is also entering the new era of smartphones, and for the past few days has had its own application for both iPhone and Android .
The free application titled «Chronicle of Mount Athos» gives the user the ability to have information:
– For the old and new calendars (the old one is still in force in the Athonite State) with a simultaneous presentation of their holidays
– For the fasts of each day
– For the lives of the Saints through a complete Hagiology
– For the telephone directory for contact with Mount Athos
– For all the Athonite festivals of all the holy shrines
– For spiritually beneficial sayings from the wisdom of the Fathers
In fact, if someone wishes, they can receive a daily notification on mobile phone , at the time they specify, for the day's celebration and fasting.
The application was created by the Thessaloniki-based company ASTAE, wishing to facilitate the 300,000 visitors that Mount Athos receives every year, as well as the faithful in general. The data was kindly provided by the fathers of the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator on Mount Athos, on the condition that it be made available free of charge.
The director of AST, Giannis Theodorakis, explained that the idea for the app arose when he and the company's executives, who frequently visit the Eternal City, realized that the place lacks visitor information; for example, they don't know where to go to rent a car, or the phone number of the Monastery they wish to visit.
The company's idea is to provide the application's information in Slavic languages for foreign visitors to Mount Athos.
