ESET advises shoppers to be particularly careful on the occasion of the start of sales, offering useful tips for safe online purchases .
1. It is essential to check your Laptop, PC or mobile device before making any purchase: update and repair your browser, check your application plug-ins, operating system and security suite. It is also important to consider the security of the connection: if WiFi is used, look for the key or lock symbol in the relevant dialog box, while especially if you are making a purchase via mobile device, avoid public hotspots, and prefer the 3G or 4G network offered by your phone.
2. We prefer to buy from well-known sites, and if we are not sure about the reliability of a site, a little Google research can enlighten us. We do not forget to carefully read the description of the goods that are on sale, as well as the reviews of visitors and those who have already made purchases.
3. We ensure the security of the transaction by checking that the SSL protocol is used. There should be https in front of the web address instead of http. We prefer to pay using a credit card rather than a debit card, while we do not forget to use different and strong passwords – Useful tips forcreating a strong password are given by ESET researcher , Aryeh Goretsky, here.
4. Be wary of "unbelievable" prices and offers, especially when they appear in the form of Pop-up windows and links that advertise excessively low prices for goods, or inform you that you have won a competition. particularly wary of offers that are valid for a very limited time.
5. We do not provide more information than is necessary. Fields marked with an asterisk are usually mandatory, however, if an information is not requested as necessary for the transaction, it is preferable not to provide it.
6. We await the issuance of the credit card bill, to consider that the purchase process has been successfully completed.
