It's only been a week since the new year and we have our first major cybercrime: Slovenian Bitcoin exchange Bitstamp was hacked yesterday, and has suspended its services for the time being, according to ZDNet.
A message on Bitstamp's homepage says that one of the company's business wallets was hacked on January 4, 2015. The company then suspended its services. According to the company, nearly 19,000 BTC, worth about $5 million, were stolen. One BTC is worth about $270.
The company says that most of its funds are held in "cold storage," meaning in systems that do not have access to the internet - and only the digital currencies used for frequent online transactions have been lost.
The company asked its customers not to make deposits that were issued to old Bitcoin addresses to prevent further losses. The company also stated that “all customers who lost digital currencies before the temporary suspension of services will not be affected and the amounts will be refunded in full.”
The company has yet to reveal further details about the breach or when their service will be restored. In the meantime, the company's CEO Nejc Kodrič apologized via his Twitter account.
