Twitter in Greece recorded fewer "tweets" and fewer new users compared to the previous year in 2014.
According to the monitor's year-in-review data, this year only 80,000 new users registered on average, compared to 139,000 new members in 2013.
Also, 160 million tweets were recorded throughout the year , which is 30 million fewer than last year. Essentially, this year we had an average of about 5 tweets per second, compared to six in 2013.
There were also fewer hashtags and videos on Twitter, as in 2014 we had 1,085,000 hashtags and 860,000 videos compared to 1,697,000 and 1,322,000 respectively last year.
The measurements
However, the hashtags #eurovision, #vouli and #samaras have remained constant in the measurements from 2010 to this year . It is noteworthy that #vouli saw a 12% increase, which proves that we may tweet less about more trivial issues, but we are still very much involved in important current affairs.
The most popular hashtags on Twitter this year include job advertisements, the Nikos Romanos case, national events, and Syrian refugees in the "Greece" category.
In terms of politics, the most popular ones related to the Parliament, SYRIZA and the elections, while users also dealt with Potami and the Baltakou case.
Internationally, after Greece and Cyprus, areas with social unrest and conflicts were found, as well as the hashtag of the European elections.
In terms of sports, the World Cup held the top spot, followed by hashtags for PAOK. Twitter users also showed interest in dance and music competition TV shows.
Top tweets
At the top of the most retweeted tweets was one from Giannis Antetokounmpo, and in second place was one from the official account of the Greek National Football Team celebrating the equalizer in the match against Costa Rica.
Interestingly, Amphipolis was not listed among the most popular tweets, while on the contrary it was in first place among the fastest growing searches, with elections in second place and NERIT in third place.
In terms of personalities, the list of the fastest-growing searches includes Robbin Williams, Sakis Boula and Jennifer Lawrence in the top three, while Antonis Vardis and Jenny Vanou are also in the top ten, as well as… Kontsita. In terms of events, the top three searches are closed by the elections, Eurovision and the World Cup.
