A case involving the mass and unprovoked sending of mobile phone messages (SMS), ...with specific content, to citizens was investigated by the Electronic Crime Prosecution Directorate of the Greek Police.
At the same time, a regular procedure case was filed against a Greek for violating provisions of the legislation on the protection of individuals from the processing of personal data.
The case was preceded by complaints, according to which an unknown perpetrator was sending mass mobile phone messages (SMS) from numbers abroad (USA, Canada), urging recipients to contact, on other phone numbers, a female person who had supposedly found their number through a mutual acquaintance.
Specifically, the content of the message was as follows: "I saw you at the cafeteria and I really liked you. Sakis/Themis/Thanos gave me your number. I'm the girl who was staring at you. I'd be happy to talk. 69..…….". The sending numbers were a) +17142664594, b) +17142264594 and c) +19499031148, while the telephone numbers listed at the end of the message are: 1) 6982284235, 2) 6943544619, 3) 6948904475, 4) 6948926425, 5) 6943544569, 6) 6955741295, 7) 6948359222 and 8) 6947978267.
The competent prosecution authorities were informed of the above and a preliminary examination was ordered, within the framework of which a Greek man residing in Agios Dimitrios, Attica, was identified for his involvement in the case as the owner of the telephone connections.
In the context of the specialized investigation by the Cybercrime Prosecution , it emerged that the telephone numbers mentioned at the end of the message are not used for the purpose of high billing or for advertising reasons, while the exact purpose of sending the SMS is being further investigated, mainly in the field of personal data violation.
The case file drawn up for the case will be submitted to the Athens Misdemeanor Courts Prosecutor's Office.
