Laser weapons are slowly but steadily entering the US arsenal.
The US Navy 's research center announced the first successful use of lasers on a warship located in the Persian Gulf.
The important thing, according to the officials who installed and tested the system on the USS Ponce landing ship, is that it worked harmoniously with the rest of the ship's systems, such as the ship's Fire Command Center and the detection systems.
Rear Admiral M. Klunder, who is in charge of the project, pointed out that: “ weapons are powerful, cost-effective and will play a vital role in the future of naval warfare. We put this particular weapon, a prototype, through some very difficult conditions, and it still locked on and destroyed the targets we had demonstrated with almost instantaneous effectiveness.”
What is most important for the US Navy is that the launch cost is less than one dollar as it operates on electricity, while in terms of construction it is infinitely more economical than a missile.
