Financial Times: Google breakup plan promoted in Brussels

Financial Times

The European Parliament is preparing to call for the breakup of Google in Europe, in the strongest blow yet against the American company...

According to the British newspaper, the request is expected to increase pressure on the European Commission to take a tougher stance against Google, either in its investigation into competition violations by the technology giant or through the introduction of laws to limit its influence.

A draft proposal seen by the Financial Times says that “separating search engines from other commercial services” should be considered as a possible solution to Google’s dominance. The proposal has the support of the two main political blocs in parliament, the European People’s Party and the Social Democrats.

According to the FT, the MEPs' move reflects a shift in German politicians against Google. German politicians are the dominant force in the European Parliament and the country's "national champions" are among Google's harshest critics.

A well-informed source for the British newspaper claimed “that this is a politically motivated campaign.” “These guys are calling for the breakup of Google. This demand is disproportionate to the concerns that the Commission has expressed during the investigation,” he added.
