Two teenagers from Romania were arrested this morning after attacking and defacing the content of websites from several police departments in the country, from September to October.
The duo, aged 17 and 18, managed to gain access to the servers of 20 law enforcement agencies, as well as that of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police (IGPR).
Two months ago, on September 18, they posted a message on the main page of the IGPR website, claiming to be members of the Romanian branch of the hacker group Anonymous.
“Greetings gentlemen. We are Anonymous. We are legion. We are Romanians and, of course, 'ciumpalacii'. Wake up, Romania!” the message said.
The “greeting” was deleted, but an investigation into the attack was launched at that time. The servers did not contain information related to police investigations, but were used to host websites of organizations and contained public information.
Anyone visiting the website that day would have found that unauthorized users had managed to infiltrate the police.
According to the Directorate against Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), which coordinated the investigations, one of the teenagers is indeed a member of the Anonymous in Romania.
The two hackers, from Galati and Bucharest, are now being investigated for illegal access to computers and tampering with the integrity of information data. Depending on the charges brought against them after the investigation, the maximum sentence they face under Romanian law is seven years in prison. However, they could also "get away with" just a few months in prison.
