The information that the National Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) recently provided to mobile phone companies regarding their obligation to block stolen mobile phones is now in the implementation phase.
As "Kathimerini" notes, the first applications have already been submitted to mobile phone companies by subscribers whose mobile phones have been stolen and are requesting that they be blocked. At the same time, several mobile phone users came to stores, mainly to get information and some to declare their stolen mobile phones.
The process that must be followed is time-consuming, but it is also the only one that can be effective.
Each mobile phone device has a unique code (IMEI). This is usually written on the back of the device (where the battery is inserted) or can be found if the user types * # 06 # on their device.
Having in hand the proof of the theft report to the Police and the IMEI number, someone can contact the provider and request the blocking of the device. The provider is obliged to inform the other national mobile networks, so that the device can no longer be used in Greece.
"After many complaints and denunciations from consumers, we promoted and are now implementing by companies the mandatory deactivation of stolen mobile phones in national mobile networks, via IMEI. Now, in the event of theft, not only the SIM card is rendered unusable, as was the case until now, but also the device, as long as the owner has foreseen and recorded the IMEI, the "identity" of the mobile phone," EETT President Konstantinos Louropoulos told "K".
According to specialized technicians, it is difficult for those who attempt to use stolen mobile phones to circumvent this specific regulation, as "in order to use them in Greece, the circuit board must be replaced, which increases the difficulty and cost," comments Konstantinos Sadikis, a mobile phone technician.
