WikiLeaks today released copies of the FinFisher malware used by various governments around the world to spy on individuals .
FinFisher software is not new – it exists in the surveillance software market, and gains access to victim systems using common malware techniques. It compromises desktop computers, and is used to spy on mobile communications from Android, iOS, and BlackBerry devices.
“ FinFisher continues to operate unabated. In Germany it is being sold as surveillance malware to some of the most repressive regimes in the world. The Merkel government pretends to be concerned about privacy, but their actions say otherwise,” says WikiLeaks Editor-in- Chief Julian Assange .
By making malware available to anyone around the world, it aims to help everyone develop the right tools to protect against malware. It also aims to help identify malware command and control centers.
The software is being developed by a German company that, until late last year, was part of the Gamma Group International . According to WikiLeaks, the software is mostly used against “journalists, activists and political dissidents.”
