NFC device orders will quadruple in the next five years, IHS Technology research predicts
MasterCard announced that it is making contactless acceptance a common practice by 2020 for transactions with merchants using MasterCard and Maestro in Europe, ensuring that consumers will be able to pay with their contactless cards and NFC-enabled devices at all point-of-sale (POS) terminals in Europe by 2020.
“Europeans can already use their contactless cards or NFC devices in 36 countries across Europe and their enthusiasm for this secure and simple way to pay is evident,” said Javier Perez, president of MasterCard Europe. NFC mobile orders are set to quadruple in the next five years, according to IHS Technology.
A study on contactless transactions, conducted by Prime Research, demonstrates how quickly this technology has been adopted by consumers. According to Prime’s research, the first countries in Europe where consumers are willing to adopt contactless payments and integrate them into their daily lives are the UK, Poland, Russia, Italy, Hungary and France.
