Stolen email from top universities around the world have been found for sale on Chinese website Taobao. Palo Alto Networks, a cybersecurity company, has identified 99 listings with stolen emails and passwords from 42 top universities in more than 10 countries:
MIT, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, University of Chicago,
New York University, Hong Kong University were some of the institutions that were “hit” by hackers. The stolen accounts appeared available for sale at prices starting from $0.12, while in some cases they exceeded $300.
When Taobao was informed of the incident, it assured that it would immediately resolve the problem with illegal listings. Many universities have already started using a two-step verification system to prevent such phenomena in the future.
