JPMorgan Chase & Co. and at least one other major American credit institution were attacked by Russian hackers in mid-August, according to a Bloomberg report.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation, the FBI, is examining whether this action is in any way linked to the sanctions imposed by the US government on Russia due to Moscow's actions in Ukraine, according to the publication, which cites two unnamed sources.
This attack resulted in the theft of sensitive data and authorities are also investigating whether and to what extent it is related to recent intrusions into the systems of major European banks, according to one of the sources who spoke to the Bloomberg news agency.
JPMorgan, which was asked to comment on the information, said in a statement that "companies of our size unfortunately experience attacks via the Internet almost daily. We have multiple zones of defense to address any threats and are constantly monitoring the levels of fraud attempts.".
