Following the decisions of the European Union and the USA, the “Civil Aviation and Safety Authority» of Australia, from today allows passengers to use their mobile phones in flight
Australia from today allows its airlines to use mobile phones and other similar electronic devices during flights, following the example of the EU and the USA, which already last year have allowed their use inside aircraft.
In the use of these devices there will be marginal restrictions and the mobiles will display the indication in «flight mode» during taxiing, takeoff and landing of the aircraft. In these cases passengers will not be able to make calls from their mobiles, nor send messages.
Currently in Australia, the new measure has been adopted by two airlines, Qantas and Virgin Australia. Qantas announced that strict electronic checks have been carried out to verify the safety of mobile phones in flight, while Virgin Australia welcomed the decision, noting that a large proportion of its passengers travel with at least one mobile electronic device.
Peter Gibson, head of the «Civil Aviation and Safety Authority» of the country (CASA), said that the results of lifting the use of mobile devices on flights in the EU and US showed that modern aircraft are not at risk from interference of mobile phones, tablets and other related devices. He added that the aircraft of the «next generation», which have been built in the last ten to fifteen years, will have no problem.
Anyway, two of the airlines in Australia, Jetstar and Tigerair, have not yet requested to follow the new CASA guidelines, according to its head.
