Cloud storage and backup service Zoolz recently made a controversial decision, terminating a user's account, citing illegal content.
The company spoke of a violation of intellectual property, however, the curious thing is that the user had not saved actual pirated content, only some .torrent files with a total size of less than 1MB.
TorrentFreak reports that the account belonged to service user Ryan Gallagher, who was banned for storing five “.torrent” files on the backup service.
Like many other similar cloud services, Zoolz claims that all data transfers are private and secure. If that's true, the question remains about how the company identified the type of files the user had stored.
Of course, the terms of service partially justify this fact, as they state that Zoolz checks the content to detect pirated files.
And while all of this is completely understandable, the issue is that the user had only backed up a few .torrent files, which may indicate the intent to download illegal content, but do not concern the actual content.
The company informed the user about the termination of his account and gave him a few days to transfer his data to a more secure location.
