The latest in a series of updates for the Sambasoftware fixes a critical vulnerability that could allow an attacker on a local network to take control of a host running a vulnerable version of the Samba nmbd NetBIOS services.

Samba CIFS network file sharing protocol. SMB/CIFS is best known as the protocol used to share files over Microsoft Windows networks, and Samba exists largely for the interoperability of non-Windows systems with these networks. nmbd is a server component that responds to NetBIOS over IP requests on networks by mapping NetBIOS names to IP addresses.
