23-year-old student Daniel Stratman convicted of hacking

A 23-year-old University of Nebraska-Lincoln student who hacked into the institution's systems and gained unauthorized access to student records, account information and passwords was sentenced last week to six months in prison.

Daniel Stratman hacked into university computers from his Lincoln apartment at least seven times in a month. The report does not say what happened to the sensitive data he accessed or whether he made any changes to the files.

The incidents were discovered by staff in late May 2012, who notified authorities. After confiscating Stratman's computer and completing an investigation of the device, police found evidence linking him to the violations. At the time of his arrest, the student was in his final year.
