The positions that will be eliminated correspond to 14% of the company's current workforce
Microsoft is set to embark on the biggest wave of staff reductions in its 39-year history. According to an announcement by the company, up to 18,000 jobs will be cut by the end of 2015.
The bulk of the layoffs, 12,500 of them, will be at Nokia, which Microsoft acquired last April. The jobs to be cut represent 14% of the company's current workforce, which as of June 5 was about 127,000. The first 13,000 employees to lose their jobs will be notified over the next six months,
The company's CEO, Satya Nadella, who took over Microsoft in February, has already said he wants to focus the company on online services, applications and "smart" devices.
