The man who has become known as the most famous contemporary musician who spread his music by offering it for free to the world. He introduces himself to us on Facebook as a part-time musician who loves to download his favorite TV series from pirated websites. Illegally.
A few days ago, Gramatik posted this interesting comment about piracy. “When you ask me why I condone piracy and distribute my music for free, one thing you need to understand is that I grew up in a working class family, so if it weren’t for broken codes and pirated sites I would never have had the financial means to buy all those expensive music programs to learn how to make music, not to mention the countless records that inspired me to become a producer in the first place. Now I can buy them, but only because I managed to succeed through pirated programs and listening to illegally downloaded albums. The music industry says piracy is a crime, I say it’s incredibly liberating.
Without piracy there wouldn't be Gramatik or any other producer who didn't grow up fucking rich. And if it weren't for all of you who for some reason come to my shows in large numbers all over the world, I'd still be the broke guy looking to download stuff from the pirate bay. So you see, giving my music away for free is not only right because I made it through piracy and sampling whatever I found sonically appealing, but it's also right because the majority of the planet's population still has nothing fucking left and is still getting their ass fucked by the system every fucking day. "And to be clear, I'm not saying this because I want you to quote me or praise me or call me a 'real artist' or whatever, forget all that nonsense, I'm saying this because I want you to understand reality. Being a rational person is far more important to me than anything else. If you feel the need to praise someone, choose someone who truly deserves it, someone who discovered a cure for a disease and saved countless lives, or someone who invented something that changed the world for the better. "And if you really feel the need to describe me in some way, call me a normal human being. I would proudly accept that title.".
