Has Tor, one of the most popular and powerful anonymity tools on the Internet, been hacked?
Two hackers have promised to present a way to decrypt Tor for $3,000 at Black Hat 2014, a major hacking conference taking place in Las Vegas next month.
"In our presentation, we will demonstrate how the distributed nature, combined with recently discovered weaknesses in the design and implementation of the Tor network, can be abused to breach Tor's anonymity," explain hackers Alexander Volynkin and Michael McCord.
Their presentation is titled, “You Don't Have to be the NSA to Break Tor: Deanonymizing Users on a Budget.
Volynkin is a research scientist and McCord is a software vulnerability analyst. The details they have revealed so far are limited, and many in the Tor community hope that the two researchers will follow responsible disclosure practices for potential exploits that could compromise the anonymity of millions of users.
Black Hat USA 2014 will take place August 2-7 in Las Vegas.
