The Facebook team revealed that between June 12 and 26, the World Cup was a dominant topic and intensely engaged users of the social network.

More than 200 million people shared their views on the matches, making more than 815 million posts, comments and likes about the World Cup.

The most talked-about goal was that of Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, which also marked Mexico's 3-0 victory over Croatia.

Brazilian player Neymar caught the attention of Facebook fans with his first goal at the World Cup, the two goals he scored against Cameroon and the penalty he successfully converted, giving Brazil a lead over Croatia.

22-year-old Neymar was declared the most popular player on the social network, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, Leo Messi and Luis Suárez.

Facebook revealed that the Brazil-Croatia match was the most talked about game on the social networking platform, followed by Germany-Portugal and Cameroon-Brazil.

Finally, the countries that led the way in comments on the social network were, in order: Brazil, United States, United Kingdom, Indonesia, India, Mexico, France, Venezuela, Argentina and Germany.

However, the World Cup was also discussed on the social network Twitter. More than 300 million tweets were made during the group stage, which included commentary on various goals, match predictions or arguments between users.

The company revealed that on Twitter, Brazil's match against Croatia was the most popular with 12.2 million tweets, followed by Brazil's match against Mexico, with 8,950,000 tweets.

The most tweets occurred during the match between Brazil and Croatia on June 12, after Marcelo's own goal.

Unlike Facebook, Messi was declared the most popular player on Twitter, followed by Neymar and Luis Suárez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Oscar.

Finally, the most popular tweet came from Mario Balotelli, who said he wanted a kiss from Queen Elizabeth II if they beat Costa Rica. This tweet managed to attract around 177,000 retweets and more than 90,000 favorites.
