Free no-ip service has legal problems

If you are using the free no-ip service for dynamic ips, either for your computer or your server, check your connection because several subdomains have not been working since yesterday.no-ip

The well-known service, which has a 14-year history on the internet, states on its blog that Microsoft , following a US federal court ruling, closed 22 of the most well-known noip on the grounds that some of these sundomains are used by malware creators.

For information, the no-ip service through the noip.com provides you with the free ability to connect your router to it and associate a subdomain with your IP address. In short, those of you who have a dynamic IP, that is, an IP that changes number constantly, can call it from afar using domains like iguru.redirectme.com or piasemia.servebeer.com

The 22 domains are down since yesterday, June 30th, and no one knows what will happen. In their blog post, they state: “We contacted Microsoft today. They claim that their intention is only to filter out known bad hostnames on each seized domain, while continuing to allow good hostnames to work. However, that is not the case. Apparently, Microsoft’s infrastructure is unable to handle the billions of queries from our customers. Millions of innocent users are experiencing service outages as Microsoft attempts to restore hostnames associated with a few bad actors.”

It's a shame though because no-ip is one of the remaining free services, especially now that another large similar service, dyndns, is now asking for money.

Update: A new announcement on July 3, 2014 on the company's Blog states that all domains are back up and running. However, their operation may be delayed up to 24 hours until the DNS servers in your country are updated. This is good news as we finally saw our dynamin ip link working again on our router. 🙂
