As vehicles become an integral part of the Internet of Things ,Ford and Intel are exploring new opportunities for the connected car.
These include the ability for driversto remotely control their carusing a smartphone, or a vehicle that can identify the ownerusing facial recognition software.
The joint research project, called Mobile Interior Imaging or Project Mobii, explores how in-car cameras could be integrated with sensor technology and data generated in and around the vehicleto create a more personalized and seamlessinteraction between the driver and the vehicle, transforming the driving experience.
The Mobii research project integrates perception technologies to provide a more enjoyable and intuitive in-vehicle.
The use of facial recognition software offers advanced privacy control and allows Project Mobii to recognize different drivers and automatically adjust features based on their personal preferences.
Upon entering the vehicle, the driver's identity is verified and the in-car experience is personalized to display information specific to that driver , such as their calendar, music, and contacts. If the Mobii program detects a passenger in the car, a privacy-protecting mode is activated to display only navigation data.
If Project Mobii does not recognize the driver, a photo is sent to the primary vehicle owner's smartphone. This way, the owner can then set permissions and determine which features should be enabled or disabled.
Gesture recognition software enables intuitive interaction for the driver. The combination of natural gestures and simple voice commands can simplify functions such as air conditioning or opening and closing the sunroof while driving.
