No one is safe online these days, as a new report reveals that nearly half of American adults have been hacked while browsing the web this year, which experts say is due to more sophisticated attacks and vulnerable software.
A report conducted by the Ponemon Institute for CNNMoney revealed that 11 million Americans have been hacked in the first few months of 2014, while the number of compromised accounts has skyrocketed to 432 million.
Security experts also warn that these statistics could be even higher because some major internet companies that have recently fallen victim to hackers, including eBay, do not share data on the number of compromised accounts.
The volume of data moving online, including personal details, purchases, banking and social information, is also becoming a much more attractive target for hackers, who are now trying to compromise accounts in order to access these credentials.
Vulnerable software also plays a crucial role in users' online security, with many still running old applications affected by security vulnerabilities that could easily be exploited to gain access to locally stored data.
