In the wake of the impact of the Heartbleed vulnerability, BESECURE conducted a survey on the level of security offered by 400 popular Greek e-shops. The survey showed that 304 (76%) of them used encryption, of which only 125 (41.1%) e-shops used exclusively strong encryption algorithms to protect their customers' personal information, 162 (53.2%) had an invalid digital certificate installed (either expired or belonging to a third-party domain) while 71 (17.7%) did not have a digital certificate installed. Finally, an important finding of this survey was that 14 (4.6%) of the e-shops were found to be vulnerable to the Heartbleed vulnerability.
According to analysts, it is estimated that vulnerabilities like Heartbleed in the near future could cause billions of dollars in losses and compromise critical public infrastructure, such as energy networks and public service networks.
