The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW.org) website of the United States recently began notifying affected users that their personal information was exposed by hackers.

In February 2014, hackers compromised the VFW website and placed malicious code that infected the systems of users visiting the vfw.org site via Internet Explorer with malware. The attack is believed to have originated in China.

An investigation into the incident shows that the names, addresses and social security numbers of approximately 55,000 VFW members were compromised by the breach.

A letter states that the website administrators were notified of the security breach on April 4.
