The Minister of Public Order and Citizen Protection at the Athens College event on Safe Internet Browsing
The event was organized with the Deputy Director of the Economic Police and Cybercrime Prosecution Service, Brigadier General Manolis Sfakianakis as speaker
The Minister of Public Order and Citizen Protection, Mr. Nikos Dendias, attended and delivered a speech at the event on the topic of "Safe Internet Navigation", which took place today (02-04-2014) at Athens College, with the Deputy Director of the Economic Police and Cybercrime Prosecution Service, Brigadier General Manolis Sfakianakis, as speaker.
The aim of the event was to inform students, as well as teachers, about the use of the Internet and safe navigation, so that they can understand both the opportunities and the risks that lie with the development and rapid spread of new technologies, enjoying the multiple benefits of the digital world.
Mr. Dendias, addressing the students of the College, stated, among other things:
«I feel extremely moved to be here with you today. From 1978 until now, decades separate us, but for me, Petros Alivizatos and all of us fellow graduates it is like yesterday (…)
Brigadier General Mr. Sfakianakis, together with the Cybercrime Prosecution Service, is doing an excellent job, without any compliments, an excellent job, highlighting the real role of the Greek Police, which is to protect the Greek citizen, the Greek family and what is most precious to us, you children.
On the Internet there are enormous possibilities, incredible possibilities, but there are also dangers. And you must protect yourself from these dangers. What we are doing, Brigadier General, and I will end with this, is that the Greek Police, the Ministry and the Prosecution of Electronic Crime are trying to create a safe environment for you.
So we are creating - and this was the last slide you saw - an electronic "zone" in which you can play safely. We will present it in a few days. I think it is a real offer to Greek society, a huge safety cage that contains the opportunities, the possibilities to prevent us from dangers.".
During the event, specialized officers from the Hellenic Police's Cybercrime Sub-Directorate referred, among other things, to measures to protect children from sexual abuse, cyberbullying and suicide prevention, as well as Internet addiction, as well as the potential dangers of social media.
After the conclusion of the event, the Minister of Public Order and Citizen Protection, Mr. Nikos Dendias, was given a tour of the College's facilities by the Management and members of the Board of Directors.
