Wireless electricity has arrived

WIRELESS POWER«We will transmit electric power without any kind of cable», says Dr Hall, general manager of the technology department at WiTricity – a newly founded wireless technology development company.

“We’re not actually putting electricity into the air. What we’re doing is creating a magnetic field in the air.”
Here’s how it works: WiTricity has created a “Resonant Source” – a coil of electrical wires that produces a magnetic field when connected to a power source. When another coil is brought close, an electric charge is created in it. No wires are required. “When you bring a device into this artificial magnetic field, it induces a current in the device, and you’re able to carry current,” explains Dr. Hall.

Do not worry about any kind of electric shock, Hall assures that the magnetic fields used for energy transfer are «absolutely safe» – in fact, they are the same type of fields used in Wi‑Fi routers. In the homes of the future, wireless energy transfer could be as easy as the wireless connection to the internet.

If everything goes according to WiTricity's plans, smartphones will charge in your pocket while you walk, televisions will flicker without connected cables, and electric cars will be equipped with fuel while parked in the garage.

WiTricity has already demonstrated its ability to transmit power to laptops, mobile phones, and televisions via resonant coil and battery coupling – while the electric car charger is in its final stages.

Hall sees a bright future for families without any cables: «We simply don’t think about it anymore: I go to drive my car and it will never be necessary to go to the gas station nor to plug it into the socket. I can’t even imagine how things will change when we start living like this.»!
