Social network Meetup.com is fighting an ongoing battle against cyberattackers who are demanding a $300 payment to thwart a campaign that has kept the website offline in recent days.

The website allows strangers to meet for activities of common interest such as sports and other hobbies, but was inaccessible early Monday afternoon.

In a Meetup blog post, the company said it was the victim of a DDOS campaign, a type of attack that hits websites with overwhelming incoming traffic. The company also said that no personal data, including credit card information, was compromised.
